EXECUTIVE SUMMARY   Download Overview of C&A CCU intervention 4-09

This case study resulted from a health care system-wide needs assessment which identified the lowest scoring department on all critical measures of the strategic dashboard of the organization.  The focus was a Critical Care Unit of a four - hospital system. Key measures of success included patient satisfaction (Press Gainey), which rose 54% over two years and has been sustained through 2010 at 99% and employee satisfaction, which rose 27% over 2 years and has remained high.

Additionally, cost was measured through a savings of $1.3 million in reduced agency usage costs and the department was 14.5 to 27% under budget three years running.

Scores on a statewide survey of critical care departments showed a year over increase in areas of teamwork (25%), safety climate (1.5%), job satisfaction (35%), perceptions of management (19.5%) and working conditions (15%).

Additionally, the staff vacancy rate dropped form an 11% high to a stable 3% which has been maintained for the last three years, as well .

The intervention consisted of assessment, training for employees and leadership and individual and group coaching.  To learn more, please contact Roberta Colasanti.
